Hybrid - resi & Urban Farming

2013

    Jakarta is on the verge of experiencing energy crisis, especially on its fresh water resource due to the continued destruction of the environment, deforestation and rapid population growth. The dry season affecting the capital city and its surrounding areas has forced greater Jakarta’s residents into a crisis of clean water from both ground and purification plant sources, as well as in gallons. If this condition happens continuously, agriculture sector will be affected and it'll lead to serious food shortages and recurrent famines as there will be not enough clean water for its irrigation.

 

   The other issue that facing Jakarta today is more than 80 per cent of the land that is suitable for agriculture is already in used. Many agriculture products which are consumed by people in Jakarta come from outside the capital city. These all issues lead to investigation of how to do a new urban farming in city of Jakarta.

 

   The site is located in Pantai Mutiara, North Jakarta, Indonesia. It is surrounded by sea and situated in housing and commercial zone which make the site is suitable for the development of urban farming. The main idea of this project tries to use the site potential to develop different concept of urban farming. There are several reasons why the site is chosen for a new urban farming, as follow:

   First, as it is located  next to the java sea, there is a lot of sea water resource can be used for urban farming. However, the problems are its salt substance and polluted material from industrial and housing waste which need to be treated.

 

  Second, Jakarta has tropical climate with rainfall peak is January with average monthly rainfall of 389 millimetres. This condition leads to the idea of harvesting a lot of rain water through the site.

 

  Third, as it is located next to bay, there is a lot of sea wind blow through the site especially at night. This renewable energy can be used to generate electricity.

 

  Four, as the site is located in commercial and housing zone, urban farming in this project will get advantage to combine with these zone programs. This condition leads to investigate the symbiotic relationship between the selected zone programs (housings and supermarket) and urban farming.
